Inscription.
Heather has a long history of medicinal use in folk medicine. It is a good urinary antiseptic and diuretic and, when used in a hot poultice, is a traditional remedy for chilblains.

As an infusion of the flowering shoots it can be used to treat coughs, colds, kidney and bladder disorders. As it is a cleansing and detoxifying plant, it can also be used in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and insomnia.

The branches have many uses including in thatching, for insulation, basketry, rope making and making brooms. A yellow dye is obtained from the plant and the bark is a source of tannin.
