Silver Birch • Beith Gheal • Betula Pendula
Inscription.
Birch is a deciduous tree with a pale white bark which may appear silver in certain light. It has elegant drooping branches with flowers, or catkins, that appear in April and May.
The flowering of its catkins in early summer led to its association with the sun in early Irish lore. It is also associated with birth, youthfulness and purity. Birch represents the first consonant of the Ogham alphabet and was a Commoner of the Wood in Brehon law.
It has been used in Ireland to make brooms and its bark used for tanning leather.
As siocair go mbíonn na caitíní ann go luath sa samhradh, tá ceangal i luath-bhéaloideas na hÉireann idir an bheith gheal agus an ghrian. Samhlaítear an bheith ghealle breith, leis an óige agus le glaineacht chomh maith.
Is ón fhocal 'beith' a thagann an chéad chonsan san oghamchraobh (aibítir oghaim). San Fhéineachas, bhain an bheith leis an aicme crann ar a dtugtaí 'aithig fedo', is é sin 'tuathánaigh na coille.'
In Éirinn, bhaintí úsáid as an mbeith le scuaba a dhéanamh agus bhíodh an choirt in úsáid le súdaireacht a dhéanamh.
