The DuPont Company Grows Quickly
Eleutherian Mills was built about half-a-million upstream from where you are now standing. By 1803, the complex included the du Pont family home which also served as the DuPont Company offices. Soon, there were extensive gardens and orchards producing food for the growing family and company workers. DuPont recorded its first sale in 1804just two years after the du Pont family's arrival to the Brandywine.
Less than a decade later the War of 1812 pitted the United States against its old enemy Great Britain. The increased demand for black powder led DuPont to purchase more land to expand production. The additional 90 acres, where you are now standing, were purchased in 1813. The area was named Hagley by a previous owner. DuPont kept the name. Black powder would be produced at Hagley until 1921.
