Victor du Pont
Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827), like his father, worked in the Bureau of Commerce during the reign of King Louis XVI. Though that and other government posts he made connections in France and the new United States. In diplomatic roles, Victor traveled throughout the United States with extended stays in New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston, where he served as French Consul.
With rising political tensions between France and the United States, President John Adams refused to recognize Victor as French Consul-General in 1797. Victor returned to France where he and his father and brother explored a move to the United States on a more permanent basis.
