Soda House
The Soda House was constructed in 1888. It took its name from the nitrate of soda sodium nitrate which was processed and stored here until the DuPont Company closed the powder yards in 1921. In the early 1920s this building became part of Dilwyne, the estate of Robert Ruliph Morgan Carpenter and Margaretta Lammot du Pont Carpenter, a great-granddaughter of E. I. du Pont. It was acquired by Hagley in 1977.
Adaptive re-use of this historic building has been made possible by grants from the Pew Memorial Trust, the Longwood Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Delaware State Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, and the Kresge Foundation. Additional generous support came from Hagley members, local businesses, and private foundations.
