Rochester Castle
Les créneaux du château sont une partie essentielle de sa défense. Autour du parapet ou mur extérieur, au niveau des pieds vous verrez des trous carrés. On passait au travers de solides poutres de bois pour soutenir des hourds, sorte de plate-forme de bois fermée qui saillait au-delà des murs. Les défenseurs pouvaient y monter puis, par des trous découpés dans le plancher, faire tomber des objets sur les attaquants qui réussissaient à s'approcher des murs du donjon. Les archers pouvaient tirer à partir de cette position, tout en restant abrités des attaques.
