1. Rochester Riverside Marker

The riverside area you see before you over the battlement once a marshland intersected by creeks and inlets, which linked close to the Watling Street (current day High Street). In medieval times here was little development next to the river. It mentioned that public executions sometimes took place in this open area referred to as the 'Common'. It would have been used as a place of gathering, washing horses and most likely boat repairs and fishing. There would have been some commercial activity close to the bridge at what became known as the 'Town Quay' and ships would have been loaded and unloaded here.
