I watched the flag pass by one day, It fluttered in the breeze; A young marine saluted it, And then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform, So young, so tall, so proud; With hair cut square and eyes alert, He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought... how many men like him, Had fallen through the years? How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears? How many pilots' planes shot down, How many died at sea; How many foxholes were soldiers' graves, No, Freedom is not Free. I heard the sound of Taps one night, When everything was still; I listened to the bugler play, And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times, That Taps had meant "Amen"; When a flag had draped a coffin, Of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives; Of fathers, sons'and husbands, With interrupted lives. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and America was at war. Meat, sugar, gas, rubber, nylon, and many other items were rationed. It seemed hard to get along without some of these things but when my sons and brother were called to go into service, rationing seemed to lose its sting. Seeing my four boys, and brother, Jay, all called to serve their country is a heartbreak that cannot be explained. One must experience it to know the hurt. Jay entered the Marines, was captured as a prisoner of war, was forced to march in the Philippine Bataan Death March and was later killed on an unmarked prison boat and buried at sea. Kay joined the Air Force. He became a flight navigator. Mack joined the Navy, Don joined the Merchant Marines, and Clifford Olson, who I also raised, chose flying in the Navy. Mack's job was to supply the men overseas with necessary equipment. Always under danger while on the water and having no artillery to fight with, Mack's only weapon was to outrun their enemies. He had many narrow escapes. On Kay's 13th bombing mission over Germany, his plane was shot down by army artillery. Five of the ten men aboard were able to parachute to the ground alive but were immediately taken as prisoners. The Germans marched the prisoners for hundreds of miles as part of the "German Death Marches" forcible movements of prisoners between Nazi prison camps during the War. Many prisoners died and all were mistreated on the marches. Anyone who couldn't keep up was shot and left behind. Kay carried his best friend, a soldier from Grand Junction, Colorado who had a broken leg, all day every day so he wouldn't be killed. Any sickness or hurt I've ever had cannot compare with the feeling inside me the day that government letter came stating, "Kay S. Taft missing over Germany while on a bombing mission." I never knew for many months whether he was alive or dead. Then one day, the letter came from the Red Cross stating," I'm alright and well." 8. The entrance to the Bicknell Veterans & Heritage Memorial Park

carried his best friend, a soldier from Grand Junction, Colorado who had a broken leg, all day every day so he wouldn't be killed. Any sickness or hurt I've ever had cannot compare with the feeling inside me the day that government letter came stating, "Kay S. Taft missing over Germany while on a bombing mission." I never knew for many months whether he was alive or dead. Then one day, the letter came from the Red Cross stating," I'm alright and well." The letter came to our old PO box that only he knew the number. I knew it was from him. The end of the war liberated him.
