Myrtle Beach generously donated land to become a U.S. Army airfield during World War II, with the mission of training air crews for combat duty. Additional acreage, in today’s Carolina Forrest area, served as a bombing range for air crews.

Those who trained and supported the military here created a community and bright heart to Myrtle Beach that lives on today. We commend them for their loyalty and dedication to our Country.

More than 180,000 South Carolianians entered the armed services during World War II. At least 900,000 people received military training in South Carolina at 12 major Army airfields throughout the state. These soldiers who called South Carolina home, no matter how briefly, contributed greatly to the Country’s pilot and air crew training, antisubmarine defense, and preparation and staging for deployment to Europe.
