Inscription. This statue of Lance Corporal Maurice Patten, Service number G/483 of the 7th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment, 12th Division, was gifted to Chichester City Council by local sculptor Vincent Gray MRSS.

Maurice Patten, a resident of Eartham, died of injuries sustained on 13th January 1916, he was 24 years old; the Patten family lost another son, Harry, in 1914.

Maurice is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, Northern France and his name is also recorded in Eartham Village Hall and Chichester Cathedral on the panels in the Royal Sussex Regiment's Chapel.

The depiction of Maurice is particularly poignant as he stands at 'resting on arms reversed' which is the recognised mourning stance, head bowed and muzzle of the rifle on the left foot.

Arranged around his feet are his personal effects which his mother received following his death and comprise of tobacco pouch, silver watch and chain, a Bible and four family photographs. The Bible, which survives today, bears shrapnel damage.

The Royal Sussex Regiment cap badge reads 'Honi soitqui mal y pense', a French maxim used as the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter. It is translated as 'Evil be to him that evil thinks."
