Regarding Old Union County Courthouse. At the time of the nomination forms were submitted, the Old Courthouse was in need of rehabilitation. The community was seeking a solution as to the building's future use. It now houses the Union County Historical Society.

Excerpt from the County Courthouses in Georgia Thematic Nomination Form:
The courthouse has been abandoned for full daily use as a courthouse but still houses some county and city functions. A newspaper article is enclosed to show plans for the building. The following quote is from a civil engineer with the Tennessee Valley Authority;

"The building has deteriorated more from an appearance standpoint than structural. While structural deficiencies do exist, they are repairable, and, depending on its future use, the repair costs need not be excessive. Properly repaired and cared for, this building is capable of useful function for years to come."

The owners have applied for a Heritage Conservation

and Recreation Service Grant-In-Aid.

Excerpt from the Old Union County Courthouse Nomination Form:
This courthouse is built on a cross plan utilizing the round arch motif in interior and exterior. Originally there was a clock tower which has been removed giving the building a truncated look. Some of the decorative turrets are also missing. The main entrance has a projecting stoop covered with a Richardsonian stone-trimmed arch. The clock tower was an extension of this structure. Matching two story pavilions frame the entry. On the second story of the pavilions there are triple blind arcades separated by pilasters. A stone stringcourse encircles the building. The roof is hipped with intersecting gables.
