During World War II, the U.S. Coast Artillery used batteries, or groups, of four 90mm guns (two mobile and 2 fixed) in Anti-Motor Torpedo Boat/Anti Aircraft roles. Fort Miles had three such batteries during the 1940s. Batteries 5A and 5B were located near what is now the Point parking lot, and Battery 7 was located at Cape May, NJ.
Difference between gun displayed and original: This gun (M2) had a slightly more automated feed system for shells which could fire 23 rounds per minute. The barrel of the M2 could also depress to 10 degrees for use as an anti-tank gun, whereas the guns at Fort Miles (M1/A1 and M1/M3) could not.
