Sparrenweg seen from the 1st, Oosterparkstraat.
On the left at number 11 was the entrance gate to the schools that were in the courtyard.
During the Second World War, all Jewish children and their Jewish teachers had to be placed in separate schools by order of the German occupier. The Camper and Vrolik schools were designated for this purpose. On 8 March 1943, the school was closed because all teachers, staff and students of Jewish descent had been deported to the extermination camps in Eastern Europe.
This genocide is known as the Holocaust or Shoah.
Here we commemorate all those who were deported via this gate between 1941 and 1943.

NEVER WILL THEY BE FORGOTTEN

After the Second World War, the school continued under the name Louise de Coligny School. In 1987, the school building was demolished.

Between those two Jewish neighborhoods, the Jodenbuurt and the Transvaalbuurt, was the Oosterparkbuurt. In the 1940s, about 30,000 people lived there, of whom more than a third were Jewish. Of the 1,400 public pupils in this neighborhood, about a third were Jewish.

When the municipality carried out the order of the German occupier that all Jewish children had to go to separate schools, two schools were made available in this neighborhood for this purpose, the Vrolikschool and the Camperschool.

These schools were housed together in the double school building within the block of houses between

the Beukenweg and Sparrenweg, behind the gate at number 11. From Monday, September 22, 1941, these were Joodsche school 5 and Joodsche school 6.

More than 500 Jewish children attended these two Jewish schools. The 230 non-Jewish children from those two schools were in turn moved to the other schools in the neighborhood, the Boerhaaveschool and the Linnaeusschool. While all the Jewish children from the various schools in that neighborhood were banished to the two new Jewish schools.
