1. Burglund Elementary & High School Marker

Inscription.
This school for Black students, located at the corner of St. Augustine & Elmwood Streets, was built in 1937. Mr. Commodore Dewey Higgins served as the Principal from 1937-1958. The first female Principal was Mrs. Georgia Westbrook. From fall 1956 through May 1958, some black students attended school at the Westbrook Elementary School on Martin Luther King Drive where Craft Funeral Home is now located. Mrs. Helen Hood was Principal. The new Burglund Junior High & High School on N. Elmwood was built in 1958 and the school on the corner of St. Augustine & Elmwood was later named Westbrook Elementary in honor of Mrs. Georgia Westbrook. The school served grades 1-6.
