The lower plaque was part of the original 1954 installation, while the plaque with names was added in 2020.
(In reprisal for an action by the Resistance, the German occupiers transferred 29 prisoners from the House of Detention on the Weteringschans to this location and shot them without trial in the early morning of October 24, 1944.)

1. Amsterdam Verzetsgroep (National Comitι 4 en 5 mei, in Dutch). The execution was a reprisal for the killing of an agent of the Sicherheitsdienst (the occupying German security force) at that same location on the previous day. Excerpt (in translation):
Early the next morning, 29 prisoners were taken from a cell block of the prison on the Weteringschans by the occupying forces and transported in groups of five or six, with their wrists chained together, to the crossroads where the attack had been committed. There, on the orders of SD chiefs Lages and Blumenthal, they were shot at 7:30. Local residents were forced to watch. Some sources believe that only one SD man took charge of all the executions. The last group of chained prisoners tried to escape, but this was prevented by killing the middle man. The remains were left for two hours before an undertaker took them away.(Submitted on May 16, 2025.)
