1. Kanab School Marker

Inscription. The people of Kanab rejoiced in 1917 as water was piped to this knoll to start construction on a school building. It was a grand year in 1918 that marked the completion of the new large fourteen-room school building that topped what the early pioneers called, "Monument Hill." Brigham Young, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had predicted while in Kanab, that someday a temple for this church would be built on this hill. When the school was located here the people said, "It would be a temple of learning."

The 1st to 6th grade students moved into the south rooms of the building and the 7th through 12th grade students moved into the north rooms. School continued with all students attending here until November 29, 1954 when an elementary school was completed and dedicated at 41 West and 100 North. Each individual elementary student carried small school supplies such as books, paper items and some chairs to the location as they moved into their new building.

The 1917 school building then functioned only as a high school. The last graduating class was in 1955. At the beginning of the school year

in 1956, the students entered a new Kanab High School. In 2017 it was partially razed for the community center seen here now.

In the right hand corner of the picture is a partial showing of the original Kanab Library. It was built in 1938/1940 by Kanab City. The rock work on the building along with the fence was part of a W.P.A. (Works Projects Administration) project. It faces North so Kanab students could easily access the library. In 1997 it was to be razed; but with much persuasion by the Kanab Heritage Council, the city mayor gave the old library building to them to see what they could do with it. By 1999 it became the Kanab Heritage Museum which preserves the history of our original pioneers and much more.
