Welcome to Wareham
The ancient Saxon walled town
LSWR Adams T3 number 563 and 'Railway Children' Fame
Built in February, 1893, for hauling express trains on the London and South Western Railway, 13 class 4-4-0 wheel arrangement locomotive No. 563 was withdrawn by the Southern Railway at the end of the Second World War in August, 1945, by which time it had run a total of 1.5 million miles. It would have been a familiar sight at Wareham Station.
A new 'Railway Children' theatrical production saw the locomotive cross the Atlantic Ocean and travel to Toronto, Canada in 2011, No. 563 subsequently starred in theatrical performances both in Toronto and, following its return to the UK, in London.
Friends of Wareham Railway Station
In March 2017 the National Railway Museum generously gifted the sole surviving Adams' designed T3 class, No. 563 to the Swanage Railway Trust and ever since day one the exciting ambition has been to return her to steam. The 563 Locomotive Group has been formed to ensure its preservation for future generations.
The Friends of Wareham Railway Station (FOWRS) was formed in 2012 to care for and enhance the heritage of the Grade Station built in 1886. Visit the waiting room on platform 1 to see displays of memorabilia.
Erected by Wareham Town Council.
