Renfrew, The O'Briens, and the Founding of the Montreal Canadians
Renfrew, les O'Brien et la Naissance des Canadiens de Montréal
Inscription.
In the early 1900s, the Stanley Cup was awarded to the top team in the Eastern Canadian Hockey League (ECHA), which then defended the cup against challengers from outside the league. Challenges from the Renfrew Creamery Kings were turned down in 1907 and 1909, as was the team's bid to join the ECHA. The Creamery Kings' wealthy backers, M.J. O'Brien and his son Ambrose, were frustrated by these rejections. In December of 1909 they joined forces with the owners of the Montreal Wanderers, a former ECHA team, to form a new league, the National Hockey Association (NHA). To stimulate intra-city rivalry with the Wanderers, the O'Brien's [sic] also bankrolled a new French-Canadian team called the Montreal Canadiens. The NHA, soon the premier hockey league in the country, later developed into the National Hockey League. The Canadiens, founded by the Irish O'Briens, became the pride of French Canada.
