1. Pakenham Village School Marker

Inscription.
Pakenham's first village school opened in 1841. The large frame building still standing on the corner of Dalkeith Street and Waba Road was built in the 1850s and once housed both a common (elementary) and a continuation (high) school. You are facing what has been the site of the village school since the 1880s. The low wall in the parking lot was preserved from the large stone school that stood here from 1886 until 1968. Serving as an elementary school throughout its history, a continuation (high) school was also offered upstairs from 1899 to 1948, after which time students were bussed to either Almonte or Arnprior for high school. Students from the township's six rural one-room schools joined the village children in the 1960s. Rescued from the demolition of the school, this school bell announced to the village the start of the school day for over eight decades.
