Horace Sunderlin and Hannah Adams Elderedge House
Inscription.
This two-story Italianate central-passage cross-wing house, was built about 1865 by Horace S. Eldredge for his third plural marriage wife, Hannah Adams. Hannah and children lived in a small adobe house until this house was built. She lived here until she died in 1916. Hannah was born in 1833 in Hatley, Lower Canada, and came to Utah in 1852. Horace was born in 1816 in Brutus, Cayuga, New York, and came to Utah in 1848. He was deeply involved in commerce, purchasing enormous amounts of livestock, wagon, supplies, merchandise and machinery for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He organized wagon trains to carry the goods and thousands of European and American Latter-day Saint emigrants to Salt Lake City. When Zion Cooperative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) was organized in 1868, Horace became one of the original stockholders and directors. Horace was Vice President of Deseret National Bank and a director, then later president and superintendent of ZCMI.
Horace and Hannah were married in 1855 and raised their four sons and one daughter in this West Bountiful home. Hannah was loved and respected by her friends and family for her fairness and generosity. She later distributed parcels of her West Bountiful estate to their children as they came of age. Each son and daughter built attractive Victorian homes with a brick carriage house behind them, but Hannah's home remained as the family central gathering place.
