Inscription. The Canadian regions of New Caledonia and Columbia were combined to form a new colony called British Columbia in 1858. Moody, an English soldier, public servant and administrator became the first Lieutenant-Governor of the colony from 1858 to 1863.

The Chilcotin people had lived on the high Chilcotin Plateau in New Caledonia for centuries. They were enthusiastic fur traders, hostile to outsiders. Moody's role was to combine military and civil duties, while managing the tensions between settlers, gold prospectors and indigenous peoples.

By 1859, with a unit of 172 engineers, Moody had completed the survey and planning of the new province's capital, New Westminster. In 1871 British Columbia became the sixth province of Canada. Moody today is considered to be British Colombia's founding father and is celebrated as the father of the City of New Westminster. Moody Square and Moody Parke in the city are named in his honour.
