Theseus is een van de grootste helden uit de Griekse mythologie. Zijn bekendste daad is het doden van de Minotaurus, half mens, half stier op Kreta. Zijn moeder Aïthra wist niet wie zijn vader was. Ze had negen maanden eerder geslapen met Poseidon, de god van de zee en met Aegeus, de koning van Athene. Na zijn geboorte zei Aegeus dat ze haar zoon moet laten opgroeien tot een sterk man. Aegeus zou zijn zwaard en sandalen onder een steen leggen. Pas als hij sterk genoeg was om de steen op te tillen, mocht hij naar Athene komen. De jonge held groeide op in Troezen aan de oostkust van de Peloponnessos.

Theseus is one of the greatest heroes of Greek mythology. His most famous deed is killing the Minotaur, half man, half bull on Crete. His mother Aïthra did not know who his father was. Nine months earlier she had slept with Poseidon, the god of the sea and with Aegeus, the king of Athens. After his birth Aegeus said that she must let her son grow up to be a strong man. Aegeus would put his sword and sandals under a stone. Only when he was strong enough to lift the stone would he be allowed to come to Athens. The young hero grew up in Troezen on the east coast of the Peloponnese.
