Specialist Fourth Class Stewart was assigned to the One Hundred First Airborne Division as a helicopter gunner when he arrived in Vietnam. After transferring to the Sixty-Third Transportation Company, Fourteenth Engineer Battalion, Eighteenth Engineer Brigade, he became a truck driver. His unit, responsible for construction and limited combat functions, came under fire in Military Region I. While seeking cover under a vehicle, he was run over and killed. Born in Dennison, Ohio, Gary Stewart attended Barberton High School. Prior to entering the Army, he was employed by Superior Meats and resided in Massillon. He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Hazel Stewart of Clearwater, Florida, and eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Stewart, and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Akron, Ohio.
