Massillon in Stark County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Ronald Van Stanton
Sergeant First Class - U.S. Army
| | October 21, 1946 - October 20, 1968 | |
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Ronald Stanton moved to Massillon after high school to live with his sister and work at Republic Steel Corporation before his enlistment. A week before his scheduled return home, he was listed as "missing in action" after his CH-47 Chinook helicopter from the Seventeenth Aviation Group failed to arrive at its destination from Dong Da Thin. A week-long search failed to locate the aircraft. Friendship Baptist Church in Massillon held a memorial service in 1978. In 2001, Stanton's remains were found and confirmed; he was officially listed as "killed in action." Along with four fallen comrades, Sergeant First Class Stanton was interred in Arlington National Cemetery. A six-horse-drawn caisson bore the caskets, Chinooks roared nearby, a bald eagle soared overhead, and fifty-six veterans of the Two Hundred Forty-Third Assault Support Helicopter Company reunited to mourn.
