Inscription.
Private First Class Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hill, served with Weapons Platoon, Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division. Near Than Hioh, his unit came under enemy automatic weapons fire. Disregarding his own safety and the wounds he received in the initial blast, Hill showered well-aimed fire on the enemy. Refusing medical care, he provided covering fire so wounded comrades could be moved to safety. His continued base of fire enabled two squads to launch an assault, killing twenty of the enemy. For "extraordinary heroism," Hill was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for Valor. The Marine Corps honored him by naming an artillery position "Camp Hill." The Massillon native, a 1964 Washington High School graduate, is buried at Massillon Cemetery.
