Specialist Fourth Class Bethune landed in Vietnam on his twentieth birthday. He was killed twenty-two days later, when the armored vehicle that he was driving hit a land mine thirty miles south of Saigon. He was serving with Headquarters Company, Fifth Battalion (Mechanized), Sixtieth Infantry, Ninth Infantry Division. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bethune of Massillon, he was born in Barberton, Ohio. A 1965 graduate of Tuslaw High School, he was a member of the Massillon Baptist Temple. Prior to entering the service, he was employed by Crown Steel of Orrville. Robert Edwin Bethune is buried at Brookfield Cemetery in Massillon.
