Middlebury High School (MHS), was erected in 1911 and for the first time, the high school and the elementary schools were housed in separate buildings. The building had two floors with great brick arches over the entrance. The 1911 keystone sat proudly over the front entrance. A gymnasium was added in 1939.
For forty-three years MHS educated students until a fire on March 18, 1954 destroyed the upper floors of the school. Students continued studies at Middlebury College, returning seven weeks later to classes in the refurbished school. Students moved to a new school off from Court Street in 1957. The building was then used as the Town's Municipal Offices until 2015.
Words on the bench came from the High Schools Song and are forever inscribed so that those that pass by this site may sing the words and cherish memories of MHS.
So pure and free from stain
We'll cherish thee and keep thee thus
And pass thee again.
For we must go, but thou wilt stay
And lead in paths of light
The youth and hope that pass this way
And seek to know the truth
