1. Black Patriots of the American Revolution Marker
Inscription. The Patriots of African Descent monument is the first monument on federal land to recognize the contributions of Black patriots during the American Revolutionary War. The tensions between American ideals of freedom and the subordinate status of Black people and women fueled a struggle against racial and gender inequality for soldiers and civilians alike. By fighting for freedom against all odds, these and countless other unsung heroes laid the groundwork for future generations in America. The painting (left) by Cal Massey served as the basis for the bas-relief sculpture featured on the Patriots of African Descent monument.
James Armistead, a Virginia slave and double agent, provided invaluable intelligence about the British Army at Yorktown, which led to their eventual surrender in 1781. Despite Armistead's service to the new nation, he remained enslaved for two more years after the American victory. Leased by her owner to George Washington, Hannah Till was an enslaved cook and mother who prepared meals for the General and his staff at Valley Forge. teen, Richard Allen brought salt and supplies to the Continental Army. Aft purchasing his freedom in 1783, he went on to become a minister an founded the Africa Methodist Episcopal Church.
