Black Patriots of the American Revolution
James Armistead, a Virginia slave and double agent, provided invaluable intelligence about the British Army at Yorktown, which led to their eventual surrender in 1781. Despite Armistead's service to the new nation, he remained enslaved for two more years after the American victory. Leased by her owner to George Washington, Hannah Till was an enslaved cook and mother who prepared meals for the General and his staff at Valley Forge. Till purchased her freedom In 1778 As an enslaved teen, Richard Allen brought salt and supplies to the Continental Army. Aft purchasing his freedom in 1783, he went on to become a minister an founded the Africa Methodist Episcopal Church.
