Additional commentary.
1.
The phrase "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" is Latin meaning "it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country" and is on the memorial below the names of those who died in service in World War I. Attributed to the Roman poet Horace, Wilfred Owen, a British poet of World War I, famously used this phrase as a title for his anti-war poem, where he juxtaposes the romanticized idea of dying for one's country with the brutal reality of war.
