South Amsterdam in Montgomery County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
South Side Veterans Memorial Park
This monument was erected by South Side residents in 1946 to honor the nearly 200 men who served in the Armed Forces in World War II. It is situated on City property that once was part of the Erie Canal. Later, another plaque was dedicated to those who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, as well as the Cold War.
Thirteen trees planted around the park pay homage to the thirteen young men who made the supreme sacrifice for their Country in War Time.
For decades the park was maintained by the South Side Veterans Association. In December 2017 the entire property was conveyed to the City of Amsterdam and the Association disbanded.
