Inscription. Sorghum syrup is made from the juice of sorghum cane. It became prominent in the United States during the 1850s and was an important source of sweetener. Many people planted just enough for their own use, while others grew it as a cash crop. This No. 2 Sorghum Mill, made by C.S. Bell & Company in the late 1800s, was powered by a mule that was hitched to a long pole. The mule would walk around the mill that squeezed the juice from the sorghum cane.
