The station, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was opened by the Exeter and Crediton Railway on the 12th May 1851., The first train services between Barnstaple and Exeter were operated in 1854 by the North Devon Railway, though the track south of Crediton was owned by the district of Exeter and Crediton. After 1st of November 1865 additional London and South Western Railway trains ran through the stations going towards Okehampton., The signal box which controls the level crossing, was put into use on the 2rd June 1875. It now controls the entire Tarka line from just north of Cowley Bridge junction with the Bristol to Exeter line, all the way to Barnstable., Most of the line uses the No Signalman Token Remote System., Under this method of operation, only a single train is allowed into each section at a time. Crediton is the token handover and control for the North Devon line, the Okehampton line (as far as Okehampton station), and Crediton level crossing.
