Weissenbruch
The Dutch landscape was the favourite theme of this esteemed painter of the Hague School. Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch (not to be confused with his cousin, painter Jan Weissenbruch) found light and air to be the most decisive for the atmosphere of a painting. 'They are the great magicians', he said about it. He liked to go out, preferably in the South Holland polder landscape and regardless of the weather. Weissenbruch was friends with Vincent van Gogh. They admired each other's work. The striking use of white in his work and his cheerful character earned him the nickname 'The Merry Weiss'.
