1. The Railway in Sharbot Lake Marker

Inscription.
Kingston and Pembroke Railway
Affectionately known as the Kick and Push, it was incorporated in 1871 to run from Kingston to Pembroke. The K&P crossed Sharbot Lake on a rock-filled causeway, May 8, 1876. The line was opened to Renfrew, December 26, 1884 where a connection was made with the CPR to Pembroke.

As timber and mineral resources dwindled, the company developed financial difficulties. The CPR officially gained control of the K&P on January 1, 1913. The line was gradually abandoned beginning in the 1950s, with the last operating section from Kingston to Tichborne closing in 1986.

The Ontario and Quebec Railway
The Ontario & Quebec Railway (reincorporated in May 1881) built their mainline from Perth to Toronto. The line was completed to Sharbot Lake on the last week of August/first week of September, 1883.

While the last spike was driven May 5, 1884, a sinkhole near Kaladar prevented the start of through passenger service until August 11th, 1884.

The CPR formalized its association with the O&Q by obtaining a 999 year lease on it January 4th, 1884.
