Floris Henrik Verster van Wulverhorst (1861-1927)

Floris Verster oogstte veel succes met zijn uitbundige, grote werken van bloemen en landschappen. Hij wordt beschouwd als de grote vernieuwer van het bloemstil leven. Verster richtte zich niet zoals zijn voorgangers op exotische bloemen en planten, maar juist op de alledaagse natuur om zich heen. Hij schilderde tegen de traditie in de natuur zowel in bloel als in verval. Zijn Inspiratie vond hij vooral in zijn eigen tuin op landgoed Groenoord in Leiden. Hier leefde hij samen met zijn vrouw Jenny een teruggetrokken bestaan. Na haar overlijden en de aankondiging dat de gemeente het landgoed zou onteigenen, overleed hij door een val in de vijver bij zijn huis.

Floris Verster achieved great success with his exuberant, large works of flowers and landscapes. He is considered the great innovator of floral still life. Unlike his predecessors, Verster did not focus on exotic flowers and plants, but rather on the everyday nature around him. Against tradition, he painted nature in both bloom and decay. mainly in his own garden on the Groenoord estate in Leiden. Here he lived a secluded life with his wife Jenny. After her death and the announcement that the municipality would expropriate the estate, he died after a fall into the pond near his house.
