Inscription.
Lookaway Hall. A fine local example of the Beaux Arts style, Lookaway Hall was built in c.1900 for Walter Mixer Jackson. The white-columned mansion is distinguished by its two-story wraparound portico and prominent siting. Family tradition holds it was named “Lookaway” for the expansive view from its porch. In 1936 it became the home of Dr. Henry G. and Lillie Mealing. Respected horticulturalists, they added greenhouses to create Lookaway Gardens and developed prize-winning camellias and orchids.

Walter Mixer Jackson. Walter Mixer Jackson was born in Augusta, Ga., in 1851 and was an important figure in the creation of North Augusta. He served as general manager of the North Augusta Land Co., est. in 1890 to develop the “Carolina hills” here across the river. He supervised construction of the Hampton Terrace Hotel and oversaw the laying out of the town’s roads. His family lived at Lookaway Hall upon its completion. He moved back to Augusta in the 1910s and died there in 1922.
