The Stimpson family built this shed for use on their farm just south of town. The tar paper exterior was durable and inexpensive. This style was common in the 1880s for creating cheap, temporary buildings from work sheds to homes.

This building is unique because it is constructed of 3-foot by 8-foot panels bolted together. By removing the bolts the building could be disassembled and moved. Over the years the building was repaired and refitted for many uses. At one point it became a movable tool crib for a home builder. It was given to us by the Grebe family that had taken over the Stimpson farm in 1943.

In moving the building to this site in May of 2006 several artifacts were discovered under the floor. These included plow points, a pump handle, a scythe blade, old wrenches, and the horseshoe that hangs over the door. Today it is still used as a work building for tool storage for Heritage Village. It is sitting on skids so it can be moved about the property.

[Captions:]
In the background of this photo of the Stimpson farm you can see a work shed that might have been this building, certainly one like it.

A typical work building of the 1880s

Such a shed might be used for a blacksmith shop. We know this shed held a horse at one time and it had a stove.

This type of building was common in lumber camps. Here the "tiny" houses are loaded onto railroad flatbeds to be moved from one camp site to the next.
