Inscription.
Howard County was created on April 17, 1873, from parts of Hempstead, Pike, Polk, and Sevier counties. The first county seat was Centre Point. After the completion of a railroad to Nashville in 1885, the city grew rapidly. In 1905 after a bitter election, the county government was moved to Nashville.
