1. Early Settlers Marker
Inscription.
Dutch settlement pushed westward from Schenectady after 1700, as an expanding population needed more space. William Johnson settled on the south bank of the river in 1738 and soon rose to prominence as Indian Agent for the British Crown. He encouraged Scots immigrants to locate on his lands, to the west of here.
