Inscription. Gaelic-speaking families from Argyllshire, Scotland settled in this area as early as 1826. They met for worship services, and in 1835 began a log church that was never completed. A second log church was built in the early 1840's and a formal congregation organized in 1844. In 1867, Rev. Robert Burns, professor emeritus of Knox College, opened a new brick church. It became structurally unsafe when reroofed with slate and was replaced by the present structure, dedicated in January 1892. Two services, Gaelic followed by English, continued until 1909, when Gaelic was phased out. In 1953-54 the men of the congregation excavated a basement to accomodate expanded facilities.
