Inscription.
Amsterdam began where the Chuctanunda Creek meets the Mohawk River. Downtown developed into a thriving commercial center facing the river, the Mohawk Turnpike and the New York Central Railroad tracks. Hotels, banks, department stores and small shops lined Main Street and adjacent blocks. Professional offices and public meeting rooms occupied space above street level.
