This statue honours the valour and sacrifice of all Canadians who served in the Great War. 1914-1918. Erected in memory of General Sir Arthur William Currie, GCMG, KGB, VD General Officer commanding the Canadian Corps from 1917-18

Currie stood out among most generals in the British army. He came from the colonial militia, he was overweight, and he did not wear a moustache. At the same time, he encouraged “a frank interchange of opinions,” which was certainly not always the case among the hierarchical British. Easy-going, he remained comfortable with his staff and was well liked by his officers. Currie had difficulty, however, in transmitting his good qualities to his soldiers, whose temperament he did not understand and who found him stiff, abrupt, sometimes pompous, and occasionally insulting. especially after the loose behaviour of the Canadian Division in England. He demanded crisp salutes and polished buttons, requirements that did not endear him to the other ranks. His faults combined with the natural resentment of front-line troops against commanders in the rear to produce antagonism towards him in at least some members of the corps. What the soldiers did not realize was how concerned their uninspiring and sometimes unpopular leader was to avoid needless sacrifices on the battlefield.
