Zane Grey is credited with introducing the world to the Old West through more than eighty western romance novels, adventure books for teenagers, travelogues and short stories. He visited Kanab in 1908 while on a cougar hunting trip to the Grand Canyon and returned home to write Heritage of the Desertand Riders of the Purple Sage, novels that launched his career. Both books were heavily influenced by the people of Kane County. 116 movies and television shows were based on Zane Grey's works. Among them were Red Canyon (1949), Western Union (1941), The Dude Ranger (1934) and Forlorn River (1926) which were filmed near Kanab.

Pearl Zane Grey (January 31, 1872 October 23, 1939) was an American author and dentist. He is known for his popular adventure novels and stories associated with the Western genre in literature and the arts; he idealized the American frontier.
