Introduction
Standing high above Kendal, these ruins are the remains of the magnificent fortified manor of the Barons of Kendal. For almost 500 years, the families of Lancaster, Brus, Roos, and Parr dominated Westmorland life, administering a vast estate, keeping the peace, dispensing justice and becoming very wealthy.

The barons travelled widely, owning properties around England and often visiting London. From 1381 until 1571, the Barons. Parr held very important positions in the royal court. They lavished money on improving the castle to show their status, even getting into serious debt. As you explore, imagine their wealthy and luxurious lifestyle, as the most important family in the area and as influential advisers to kings.

Gatehouse
Visitors would cross a stone or wooden bridge over the moat to enter the imposing gatehouse, There is little remaining, apart from this large piece of toppled masonry. to your left. A cobbled path ran through the gatehouse into the busy courtyard, giving access to the principal accommodation and chapel. Large wooden doors secured the gatehouse entrance.
