Zondag, 26 november 1944, vond een luchtaanval plaats op het hoofdkwartier van de Duitse Sicherheitsdienst (SD), ondergebracht in de Christelijke HBS en in de Meisjes HBS (thans Scholengemeenschap Gerrit van der Veen) in de toenmalige Euterpestraat, nu Gerrit van der Veenstraat. Vanuit dit hoofdkwartier werd de deportatie georganiseerd van meer dan 70.000 Amsterdamse joden. Ook werden er verzetslieden verhoord en gemarteld en waren er belangrijke gegevens opgeslagen. De Christelijke HBS, aan het Adama van, werd volledig verwoest en de Meisjes HBS werd zwaar beschadigd.
Bij deze operatie - die werd uitgevoerd door 36 Typhoon jachtbommenwerpers van de Britse luchtmacht (RAF) - zijn helaas ook 40 woonhuizen vernield. Zo werd de hoek van de Euterpestraat en de Albrecht Dόrerstraat vol getroffen waarbij 39 mensen op slag werden gedood.
Vanwege het grote aantal niet-identificeerbare slachtoffers, is het juiste aantal doden van deze luchtaanval nooit vastgesteld. maar naar schatting zijn 54 burgers om het leven gekomen en raakten er 14 zwaar gewond.
Vijftig jaar later is deze gedenkplaat aangebracht.
Timeless is the silence
On Sunday, November 26, 1944, an air raid took place on the headquarters of the German Sicherheitsdienst (SD), housed in the Christian HBS and in the Girls' HBS (now Scholengemeenschap Gerrit van der Veen, i.e. this school complex) in the then Euterpestraat, now Gerrit van der Veenstraat. From this headquarters, the deportation of more than 70,000 Amsterdam Jews was organized. Resistance fighters were also interrogated and tortured here, and important data was stored here. The Christian HBS, on the Adama (roughly 50 meters to the north), was completely destroyed and the Girls' HBS was badly damaged.
During this operation - which was carried out by 36 Typhoon fighter-bombers of the British Air Force (RAF) - unfortunately 40 houses were also destroyed. For example, the corner of the Euterpestraat and the Albrecht Dόrerstraat (roughly 60 meters to the east) was hit hard, killing 39 people instantly.
Due to the large number of unidentifiable victims, the exact number of deaths from this air raid has never been determined. However, it is estimated that 54 civilians were killed and 14 were seriously injured.
Fifty years later, this memorial plaque was installed.
