Inscription.
During the American Revolution (1775-83), what is now Clinton County was the northern frontier of Northumberland County. In 1776, William McElhattan, Robert Love, William Dunn, and many others answered the call for independence and reported to Fort Augusta (Sunbury), where they were assigned to state militia units and to the Continental Army. COL Hugh White was given command of commissary units that supplied food and ammunition to Washington's Continental Army in the field. PVT Samuel Porter was detached from the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment to Morgan's Riflemen, an elite corps of sharpshooters who played a key role in the defeat of Burgoyne's army at Saratoga in 1777. On the home front, frequent attacks from Britain's Native American allies forced a mass exodus called "The Big Runaway of 1778." Most fled south to Fort Augusta and did not return until peace was restored in 1783.
