1. Cenotaph Plaque Marker

Inscription.
The Port Hope Cenotaph was originally erected in 1926, funded by the efforts of the Port Hope Chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, a women's service organization founded to foster understanding between British women and their Canadian sisters. Members pledged themselves to loyalty and patriotic service for the Empire. The oval shaped plaque located on the post is from the original flag post at the cenotaph site, and recognizes R.A. Mullholland, a former mayor of Port Hope and Canadian Senator.

Classically designed with gothic touches, this monument bears the names of 81 local residents who died in the Great War. The names of significant historic battles are carved into the shaft for all to remember. Statues of peace adorn the cenotaph, looking out for the souls lost in these horrific battles. The names of those lost in World War II were later added, as was a plaque to acknowledge those lost in the Korean War. Standing in a prominent location near Town Hall, the cenotaph "bears silent testimony to the deeds performed" by those lost in service to our country.

of Port Hope's annual Remembrance Day ceremonies and plays an important role in the continued work of recognizing and honouring Veterans and current Armed Forces members. Port Hope Branch 30 of the Royal Canadian Legion was the main supporter of the revitalization and beautification of the monument in 2020, along with contributions from the Government of Canada (Veterans Affairs Community War Memorial Fund), the Municipality of Port Hope and the community. Founded in 1927 with 16 members, Branch 30 plays an active role in the Port Hope area through support of community building initiatives, stewardship of Remembrance Day ceremonies, and support of veterans and their families. From a humble start holding small meetings in local homes, Branch 30 has grown, evolved, and become an important and impactful partner of the Municipality of Port Hope and has been strengthening and serving our community for almost a century.
