Kirkstall in Leeds in West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom — Northwestern Europe (the British Isles)
Kirkstall Abbey
The abbey was built in this once-secluded valley from 1152 to house a community of Cistercian monks who lived, worked and prayed here for almost 400 years. After the abbey was closed down in 1539, the buildings were still used, particularly by farmers. The beauty of the ruins became a focus for artists in the 1700s and 1800s, just as the city of Leeds started to expand around the abbey with the Industrial Revolution.
Today Kirkstall Abbey is a registered Scheduled Ancient Monument and is protected for future generations to enjoy. Please help us to look after our heritage by not climbing on the ruins.
