Stevensville in Queen Anne's County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Site of Stevensville Station
Walking the Kent Island Railroad
Welcome to "Walking the Kent Island Railroad," a Paths From the Past Project by Historic Kent Island, Inc.
The Queen Anne's Railroad Company built the Stevensville Station in 1902 with the rail line extension from Queenstown to Love Point. It is the only building left from the old train service on the island, which stopped in 1956. Back then, it stood 400 feet in front of where you are now, off Old Love Point Road.
In the 1950s, the station was moved to State Street (on your left) and used as a family home. In 1984, Skip Morgan) found the building when he bought the property. A friend recognized the station, so Skip donated it to the Kent Island Heritage Society.
In 1987, local volunteers and society President Gil Dunn (aka Doc), gathered at the station site. In a few hours, they moved the structure to its new spot in downtown Stevensville.
Over the next five years, the Kent Island Heritage Society restored the building. Now, you can visit "The 1902 Stevensville Train Depot" behind the Cray House on Cockey Lane, a half mile away.
Not many islanders remember the railroad, but the station is like a window into the past. Some claim they've heard a train whistle in Stevensville, adding a bit of mystery to the story.
If you're interested in the Kent Island Railroad and the historic sites the train passed, keep an eye out for signs along the Cross Island Trail. The railroad used to run from Love Point to the Kent Narrows, but this two-mile section of the trail follows its path.
