1. The Winckley Club Marker
Former location of The Winckley Clubs and The Literary & Philosophical Institution
On the northern corner of Cross Street once stood two of the most impressive buildings on the Square. The Winckley Club, with its square tower was a social club for the gentlemen of Winckley Square. It had a newsroom and two billiard rooms. James Robinson was the first Club Keeper, who lived with his family in the servants' quarters below the building.
The chapel-like Literary and Philosophical Institution, was designed by John Welch in the 1840s. The society brought to Preston nationally important speakers covering a wide range of subjects. By the 1890s the building housed the library of the former Mayor of Preston, Doctor Shepherd who left his Books to the people of Preston after his death in 1761. This collection is now housed in the Harris Reference Library.
